Understand and Resolve Windows Errors

Computer users are not alien to Windows errors that may appear unwarranted and cause unnecessary problems and frustrations. Because a computer system is a complex composition of both hardware and software components there can be an unlimited number of causes for errors to generate on your Windows computer. Although it is not possible for you to know how to resolve each and every one of them, there are some Windows errors that can be easily dealt with and resolved without seeking external technical help, which can be not only expensive but quite often, unreliable.

In this article, we are going to discuss some of the common Windows errors and the methods that you can use to resolve them.

Missing File Errors

Missing file errors are one of the most common Windows errors that occur on a Windows computer. These errors usually occur when a required program, system or DLL file goes missing or gets corrupted. For example, you may encounter problems with volume control if the sndvol32.exe file is corrupt or missing. As the sndvol32 is a system file, you may restore it from your Windows XP Setup disk. If the error occurs in some third-party program or device driver, the best way to resolve the error will be to repair, reinstall, or upgrade the faulty software. Many times, missing DLLs can be downloaded from the Internet or another computer with similar configuration and copied to their location on your computer to resolve the issue. In case nothing works, you may opt to perform a system restore to revert your computer configuration to the time when it was free of errors.

Program Installation Error

90% of programs installed on a Windows computer use the Windows Installer tool. So, if there is a problem with your Windows Installer, you may encounter Windows Installer error messages during software installation. Most of the time, Windows Installer errors occur if the installer is unable to find the setup files that are required to install the software. You may also encounter the problem if you have an older version of Windows Installer on your computer and the program you are installing requires an upgraded version. To repair Windows installer errors, you need to ensure the following:

  • If you are installing from the Internet, ensure that the MSI package is located on the URL that you are using to install the package.
  • If you are installing from a network location, ensure that you have full rights to the folder you are installing the software from.
  • You must be logged on to your computer as a user that has administrative rights.
  • If you are unable to install directly from another location, you may download the MSI package to your computer and then perform the installation.
  • Lastly, if your Windows Installer is outdated, download the latest Windows Installer package from the Microsoft Download web site and install it on your computer.

Problems with the Windows Registry

Registry problems can occur over a period of time due to the accumulation of a large amount of unwanted, obsolete, orphan and empty entries within it. Registry problems may also occur due to virus and spyware infections that may add several malicious entries within the registry database. Some of the entries are added so deep within the registry tree that it becomes almost impossible to get rid of them. Quite often, it is not possible to get rid of these entries using the Registry Editor (regedit) tool. In this case, it is recommended that you use a reliable third-party registry cleaner to perform a thorough scan of your registry and clean unwanted files and repair invalid entries. In addition to this, it is also essential that you regularly update your antivirus and antispyware tools and run regular full system scans to keep your PC safe from malicious infections.

How To Get Rid Of A Bloated Registry

My computer is slow”, is a phrase often repeated by computer users as soon as their PC gets a few months old. Although there can be many reasons for computer slow downs, problems within the registry are often times a major contribution. In this article, we are going to see why the registry is an essential part of our Windows PC, what causes problems within it, and which methods you can use to fix registry problems.

Causes of a Bloated Registry

The Windows registry is a centralized hierarchal database repository that comprises all information related to hardware and software configuration, user preferences, and system settings. Every time you browse the Web, add or remove a program, change system settings using the Control Panel or some other utility, or add/remove hardware from the system, information is added to, removed from, or modified in the registry. Registry bloating occurs when a large amount of unwanted information makes its way into the registry and unnecessarily causes it to grow to a very large size. Some of the common causes of unwanted and corrupt information in the registry are:

  • Frequent program installation and removal.
  • Incomplete removal of programs—causing orphan registry entries.
  • Virus or spyware infections that add several malicious entries in the registry.
  • System crashes that may corrupt registry entries that are being used at the time of the crash.
  • Browsing Web sites that might contain malicious content.
  • Frequent downloading and installing of freeware and shareware programs.
  • Faulty software, hardware, and device drivers.

All these and many other such problems generate a large amount of junk data in the registry, causing it to bloat up to a very large size. A large, bloated registry easily gets corrupted and starts generating registry errors and other system problems.

How to Fix the Bloated Registry Problem

Registry Editor or regedit is the registry editor tool that is shipped with your Windows operating system. Using this tool, you can perform some basic registry maintenance tasks, such as registry backup, search and remove specific information, and edit existing registry entries. However, this tool is not user-friendly and the chances of mistakes are high. Moreover, you cannot perform a thorough registry clean up using this tool. This is the reason why, it is recommended that you use a reliable, third-party registry cleaner tool to perform registry maintenance.

Benefits of Using A Registry Cleaner Tool

The following are some of the key benefits of a good registry cleaner tool:

  • A good tool has a user-friendly interface that makes it quite simple even for novice computer users to clean up their Windows registry.
  • Registry tools perform a thorough and deep scan of the registry to help you weed out and fix registry problems that exist deep within the registry tree.
  • Virus and spyware programs add malicious embedded and practically non-removable keys within the Windows registry. With the help of a good registry cleaner tool, you can easily get rid of these malicious keys.
  • An advanced registry cleaner helps you defrag the registry and optimize it by removing unwanted empty registry keys and reindexing the fragmented registry files.
  • A good registry tool can also be used to make full and selective backups of the registry. These backups are useful in restoring the registry when your current registry fails due to an unrecoverable problem on the system.
  • Many registry tools also come with advanced system management options, such as Startup Manager, Internet Explorer BHO Manager, and Privacy Manager that further help you optimize and maintain the health of your PC.
